Is Arnold Schwarzenegger Keeping You Down?

Bill Phillips, a fitness and nutritional writer, (Mr. Phillips first became famous for demystifying steroid use) was reportedly at a trade show when he realized that virtually all his best customers were terribly out of shape! It seems there are many of us who are waiting for the perfect pitch, or daunted by the specter of reaching a far distant ideal. Do not let the superstars keep you from trying!

Body For Life

Perfect is not always necessary

Action over perfection

Virtually none of us will have a body like Arnold Schwarzenegger, or golf as well as Tiger Woods. But do not let the idea of perfection stop you from getting started. Like the old proverb says, “A long journey begins with a single step.”  It is far better to get started on something than delayed the prospect of every detail. Besides, it is the journey that is most rewarding, not the destination.

Internalizing the notion of action often makes all the difference in getting motivated and defining the difference between incredible success and even mediocre plodding. For success has a foundation and structure named momentum. The preference for action is also a worthwhile life view, disarming the inner critic and allowing one to enjoy the present.

Emphasize your strengths

The story of Phillips is important for another reason. He wrote a book called Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength which is a relatively simple exercise and nutritional guide to improving one’s health. The very practical, interesting thing about the book is that it requires exercise only three times a week. Besides the reduced level of commitment, it turns out many bodies respond better to less infrequent exercise. The book is also one of the most lauded exercise companions ever written.

Bill Phillips’ real talent ended up being his writing style; clear, unadorned, motivating, and interesting. Like many successful people, he married his talent to his passion.

Not of all us need to be Arnold Schwarzenegger. Sometimes it is only necessary to execute the slimmed down version of the plan. And we can feel good about that too.
